Pot belly: The new silent killer

At the turn of the 21st century, there has been an increase in concern over our ever expanding waist lines. A consistent correlation of this unsightly phenomenon with the ever menacing lifestyle diseases has been noted by our health watch men and the alarm bells are sounding. Of late, big tummys have been associated with the ever rise in type(2) diabetic cases in America. How is it the  love handles are related to diabetes, one would ask. Firstly lets look at how these come about.
The making of a pot belly and love handles.
Lack of exercise and over indulgence in delicacies of our time has been correlated with abdominal obesity. It should be noted though that the exact nature of the of the phenomenon is not understood yet...yes even the scientist are not that smart. However what is known is that for every calorie we take up, all the excess will be converted to fat. For example if your body needs 3000 calories a day, and your greedy self consumes 5000, the extra 2000 becomes fat!, a whole lot of fat! Now exercise increases the energy demands of the body, which helps in burning up the excess calories. One should understand that the body converts extra calories to fat as a way of stocking up for tougher times. Fat is probably the greatest energy store in our bodies, together with another substance called glycogen, found in the liver and muscles. Apparently, in all low intensity activities, fat is the primary source of energy for our system. So when you seated on your couch watching T.V., you are actual burning fat for energy! And before you celebrate and cancel gym memberships, ask yourself, how much energy is needed to change a channel?

Thus the extra calories will convert to fat and be stored under your skin and around your vital organs, most of which are found in in the abdominal cavity hence the increase in size to create more space.
The result? Love handles and pot belly! But one should note also that, its still not that simple. Other factors that will be discussed later also play a role

And exercise...?

And now thus when good old exercise comes in. High intensity workout plans are now advocated for by exercise scientist if an individual entertains any wishes of shedding extra fat. And then it gets confusing (for you at least) from here on. You do not burn fat during a high intensity training! Your burn it while chilling on your couch!
And no you not waisting time at the gym!
Now what happens during high intensity activity is you burn mainly sugar and and glycogen, the other sources of energy that we have not talked about. These are easily processed by the body hence can provide quick energy. Glucose is a functional sugar component in blood, while glycogen is the stored form of glucose, found in liver and muscles. High intensity exercise will deplete these very quickly depending on your activity.
And as you know, you do not exercise forever, one element of fatigue is because of the depletion of these two substances.
And that is where the couch comes in! Rest! The body has to compensate for all the glycogen and glucose during exercise! Hence, the biggest source of energy stored is fat! Thus for a long time after your workout the body is burning fat, for the energy on demand as well as restoration of the other more important molecules.
The result? Less and less fat, lesser and lesser pot belly!

And next time we look at the health risks associated with the Potbelly.

Obesity: Overeating isn't always the culprit

The nature of human beings is to always find a scapegoat to explain all our short comings. The latter half of the last 4 decades, when our eyes where opened up to the danger of this condition, food was quickly incarcerated for it had been found guilty of of causing this condition. However forensic evidence has shown that, although this culprit has been so rightfully charged, focusing our attention too much on him is making a grave mistake. There are other accomplices that play a great role in the attainment of this condition.

Surely, when we look at this in perspective, if food was the only culprit, then simple cutting down on what we eat would easily give us a solution to our problems. However a million people can profess that they gain weight anyway, even without eating anything other than a few leaves of lettuce!
Here are some of foods partners in crime.

Genetics.
One thing thus been noted was that individuals who tend to be obese usual come from families that have this condition. Why? Because your genes determine the nature of your physiological  system, that is, how your body functions. Thus if your system says" let there be fat', fat shall be there!
However it has been noted that obese families sometimes have a skinny in their brood. Its not a sign of infidelity! The dynamics of inheritance can make other brood members be able to resist the "be fat" instruction.
Which then brings the detectives of the fat crimes to the other suspects.

Environment
An individual's environment determines their eating habits. If you poor like me, living in the ghetto were there is a voetkok spaza at every corner, then you are likely to eat a lot of this beloved delicacy. In my traditional African Culture, skinny women are just not acceptable. A woman with more voluptuous curves is regarded as a typical home maker, probably the type to build a warm home due to the extra heat that she is deemed to radiate, who knows! Our modern settlement patterns also discourage physical activity. Most cooperate working class individuals do not find time to work out as they spend most of their time at work. After work its straight into the car where you drive home to a complex of tinny Winny apartments where any form walking about will only lead to you to the neighbours space who wont hesitate to report trespassing.  Even children are not free to run about an be wild

Hormonal conditions
The most common is hypothyroidism, or simple put, an under active thyroid. And now if this chappy called a the thyroid glad is a lazy bum, what happens is your body also slows down. The individuals metabolism becomes slow and the body is ever too tired to partake in any sensible physical activity.
Another condition with a very nice name is the Cushing syndrome. My first born is getting that name Cushing!
Here the adrenal glands produce an excess of a tiredness hormone called Cortisol.
And i must say its  rare. But it causes mainly upper body fat gain which leaves you looking like an old fashioned soccer trophy.

Stress
For most people the cheapest stress reliever is a tub of Ice Cream. And we all know most of it goes to the curves!

Pregnancy
You have a human being growing inside you. Need i say more? But general changes in the bodies physiology encourage a whole lot of fat deposition to probably keep the little one more comfy.

Other Causes
Aging, smoking, lack of sleep.

Moral.
The blame on weight gain should not be put squarely on food! Its important for one to first examine the factors  that lead them to eat excessively! A good personal trainer must examine the individuals life style and tune to promote health eating habits together with a  good exercise plan.

So long...

Obesity: The Mythical Creature Demystified

When body fat accumulates in astronomical proportions, as evidenced by an obvious increase in body size, the term used to describe this condition is obesity. In the good old days, this was a sign of wealth. For a guy, a protruding one pack (Big beer belly) was enough to set the girls into a frenzy. I tell you, in the good old days, girls were much less completed. However, in the bad new days scientist linked this ''show of financial force'' to myriad of health problems such as heart disease, stroke to name but a few.
Those with good eyes have noted that in fact more often than not, this condition begins in childhood. In this the chances of the individual being obese is 3 times as much compared to skinny kids like me, having a more or less normal body fat.
And I'm sorry to say, unlike most things that happen to children, obesity wont be one of those things that one will grow out of. Its very sad really...
However with drastic lifestyle changes, in terms of physical activity and good eating habits, this condition can be reversed and kept under lock down Alcatraz style!
One thing thus also been noted is that is that children bone to obese parents are 2 to 3 times more likely to develop the condition. And laymen will be quick to blame the genetics!
Wise men from the labs however tell us that genes are not only to blame. In a family of obese parents lifestyle norms are likely to promote this condition. Obese parents are least likely to practice good eating habits or physical activities. Thus kids brought up in this environment even without genetic inheritance will most likely develop this condition.
But hold on. The skinny people aren't escaping this either! Research shows a general increase in the incidences of fatness among the adult ages of 25 to 44 years. Women usually have a larger share of this statistic (and am not being chauvinistic). This is because our cooperate office lifestyles disable us from partaking in any physical activity other Friday night out. Which is not enough action!
Moral
Obesity is everyone's problem, and we all susceptible. And its easy to blame food! But is food always the culprit?
Till next time

Weight Loss! Why exercise and not just dieting is important in achieving good results!

Well I must begin by saying that with the advent of so much information highways, it is now common knowledge that any weight loss program should always combine diet together with exercise. But who wants to spent endless hours at the gym, running to nowhere on a treadmill or lifting heavy weights yet in your daily life all you need to carry is you Blackberry? Dah!
In the past, the best way to loose weight was to go on a prescribed diet or eating plan. This plan involves a very simple process of caloric restriction, also known as starvation!
Simple put, eat much less than you usually do, then your body will compensate by eating its self, little by little, until you look skinner.
Well what happens in starvation is the body feeds off mainly of fats and carbs that are stored up (liver, muscles adipose). When these sources are depleted it then converts muscle protein to a source of energy and it feeds on it. Thus while loosing a significant amount of fat mass, one also gets to loose a significant amount of muscle mass as well. And when you go to the scale, it will tell you, " your weight has gone down congratulations!" But then your happy slim self isn't able to explain why their perfect body feels so sluggish and in most cases never in good mood. (why do you think Naomi Campbell is the world champion maid boxer? More like boxer of maids really!)
Thus starvation diets, as much as it looks good on the scale, is not the best way of loosing weight!

Now, in a research done by the man in white coats, two groups of obese woman were put on two different weight loss programs. One group was put on a specific calorie restricted diet that reduced their caloric intake by 500kcal. The other group was put on also reduced calorie diet but of only 250kcal. The other 250kcal was factored in as output though exercise. The exercise program involved mainly strength training, that is lifting weights! A third group was added as the placebo. Call me if you don't know what a placebo is!

After the prescribed duration of the experiment, the participants were weighed in. Both groups of individuals lost, an average 5kgs in total body mass. Now the study had proved beyond doubt that both methods worked. Yippee!
And now the catch!
When body fat, was measured, the group doing the sweating had lost the most amount of body fat! They had managed to retain and grow most of their fat free mass, aka, muscle and bone, and shed a significant amount of fat. On the other hand, the dieters lost on average 1.1g of fat free mass, that is muscle.
Thus the moral of the story is; lets sweat it off people, just sweat it off...

Till next time!

Nutrition 101. The for dummies edition!

Well in this series i have decided to demystify the facts and falacies of nutrition in the simplest possible way. I believe it is good for people to know what they eat as it is critical for them to monitor their diets and of course to ward off that ''guilty'' feeling when one has a good meal! I hate dieticians! Well.. hate is too strong a word a word so i must say, i like them just a little...!
Back to business, i take this opportunity to present modern diet's enemy number 1...

Carbohydrates.
This terrible food substance was invented by God to give us the much needed energy for our daily functions. It was banished by latter day dieticians because of its fattening potential. I know a few miserable individuals on a high protein diets with much less than enough energy reserves to help an ant drag its leaf across the room.
This macro nutrient, (large volume nutrient) is composed mainly of carbon an water, hence the name, carbo from carbon, hydrate from hydration. It is classified in three groups, which are:

Monosaccharides
These are simple sugar carbs in probably the most basic form. These are examplified by glucose, fructose, galactose among other less important ones....
Glucose is probably the most critical one of these. It is the only form of sugar that is found in the blood and hence it is known as blood sugar to most people. When you hear people talking about blood sugar levels, that's the guy they use as reference.
It used directly by the body cells as a source of energy of which excess of it gets converted to fat... which is the source of the modern day obesity problems.
Fructose is a fruit sugar, which my non-rocket science tells me that probably that's where its name was derived from, fruit! When ingested, it is converted into glucose by a magical organ called the liver. We will take closer look at it this marvelous organ much later.
Galactose is milk sugar, found in mammary glands, and yes i mean boobies of mammals... animal
breasts...blonds included.....
Babies, for a while after birth dig this sugar. I guess it tastes better than just sucking a thumb in the womb!
Oligosaccharides.
The most common of these culprits is sucrose... blond name? Table sugar! These are not so simple sugars made up of a few monosaccharides. Sucrose is a combination of glucose and fructose.
Lactose the major component of milk is glucose combining with galactose.
In our beloved beers we usual talk of malt. This is derived from the sugar maltose found in cereals, the hops, the corns etc. Maltose is product glucose and glucose. Two glucoses!

Polysaccharides.
These are complicated long chains of sugars. There are in two forms, plant polysacchs (sounds cool hey) and animal polysacchs
There are two important plant polysacchs which are Starch and Cellulose. And i must say starch is probably the most known...celebrity...
Starch is made up of chains of glucose units. It is the food store for plants and is obtained almost all our plant food sources, that is maize, wheat, beans, potatoes etc; and of course, KFC, Nandos...(u will be surprised how many people consider these as sources of food!) Hello Julius... Revolutionary food sources...
It is our most essential source of dietary of carbs and in its most purest form, without all the refining thing, its extra healthy. This is what nutritionist commonly refer to as complex carbs!
The other (less important) plant polysacc is cellulose. We cant digest this thing! useless! Its forms the structural skeleton of plants and is what has become known as fiber! It is critical in aiding digestion but totally no nutritional value, except in grazers and browsers. (We developed the ability to digest that back in Zim when Bob was starving us...! Ask a Zimbabwean about maputi)
The animal polysacc is glycogen. It is found in muscles and liver and its main function is to store carbs on high alert in case the body needs them and the blood does not have enough glucose. It is converted to glucose when the need arises and vice versa glucose is converted to glycogen for storage when not needed through the control of some frisky hormones called insulin and glucagon. We shall talk about these chaps later on. Approximately 375g-475g of glycogen is stored in our bodies thus next time you visit the scales, consider this fact!

Simpletons like you and me need to eat in our daily food diets 40 to 50% of our total food in the form of carbs. Otherwise you are doomed to a miserable bundle of depressed weak energyless bones! Athletes and other fit people need at least 60%

And why are the Carbs so important....
The main critical role that you shall always put in mind is that the human engine was designed to be fueled by carbs! YOU WILL NEVER FUNCTION WITHOUT THESE!
Carbs are the primary source of fuel for the brain! WITHOUT THEM YOU ARE DORM. But im not suggesting that its the case with blondes, their low carbs diets super bodies...
Carbs helps the body conserve protein and therefore channel them to their more appropriate role of building the body and taking care of other essential functions. With little carbs, the body uses protein as an energy source and creates a lot of havoc as other systems are strained!
Carbs are primers for lipid metabolism. With little carbs, lipid metabolism is incomplete, leading to production of chemicals that make the body acidic, creating lots of havoc!

Thats go out thre and indulge on those carbs! Thats how it was meant to be...and make sure your gym membership is up to date...too! Coz god designed us to eat carbs and move! No slothing!

Next time we will be looking at proteins and fats. Enjoy...

For the sports and fitness, pros and enthusiasts

Hello Fitness People!!
My blog will discuss the trends in sports and fitness industry, the latest research and foremost, the how the men in white coats think they can make you make fitter and perform much better beyond the limits of your codons!
Our modern society of limited locomotion has pre-desposed us to a lacklustre perfomance in physical activity which would digust our cave dwelling ancestors. This has lead to a new interest in in physical activity as the downsides of our sedentary living were taking toll on our health and functionality as physical beings. This has lead to the rise of the multi-million dollar fitness industry. And just as its always is with capitalism, everybody wanted a piece of this cake and thus the rise of the so called gurus, giving lots of false information, robbing consumers off their hard earned money.
Information thus published in this blog is based on hard scientific evidence obtained from years of research by the men in white coats.

Enjoy!
